a Humanist celebrant is what it says on the tin: a celebrant who is a humanist, and is trained and accredited by Humanists UK. The training is selective \u2013 not everyone is invited to join who applies! \u2013 and extremely rigorous, and doesn\u2019t stop once you are accredited either. An independent celebrant can be trained by anyone else, can be religious, spiritual or non-religious, or indeed not trained at all (this is in unregulated industry at present). The most important thing you can do when choosing your celebrant is check out their training, their accountability (do they have insurance or a complaints procedure body?) and experience. All good celebrants welcome you asking about these things.<\/p><p>Then once you have your answers on that, the next step is to choose a celebrant who really fits you. Do they share your worldview? Do you like and trust them? Would you go for a drink with them and the conversation flows easily? You will know pretty immediately who is right to represent you and your love story on your wedding CHOICE. There are so many things you cannot choose in a registry ceremony. The vast majority of words are given to you with very limited options. You cannot choose music or readings with even the vaguest metaphorical allusion to spirituality, you cannot have as many readings as you would like, or a hand tying ceremony, or make up your own ritual to celebrate you. It would take me a very long time to say all the things you CAN choose to have in a celebrant ceremony, however&#8230;!<\/p><p>Also \u2013 you can have a celebrant ceremony whenever you choose, at what time of day you choose, and \u2013 for me most importantly \u2013 you will choose, know and love your celebrant! You will have spent a long time chatting to them, hanging out with them, and getting to know them, unlike the roll of the dice you undergo with a registrar. You may get a lovely registrar \u2013 orrrrrrr you may not (!) We have all heard the stories of grumpy registrars, ones that get the names of the couple wrong, ones who makes the same tired old jokes. In mid-October the Welsh Senedd demanded that the UK government legally recognised humanist ceremonies for England and Wales immediately, or else devolve marriage law to Wales so they can legally recognise it themselves. So it is a very exciting cusp we are on at the moment!<\/p><p>However, even though the timing on legal recognition is uncertain, that doesn\u2019t impede your choice of having a humanist ceremony. You can choose a statutory ceremony at any registry office for c\u00a350, with minimal witnesses. This feels like a cool enough thing, like buying a new car \u2013 you sign on the dotted line, think \u201cyep, done!\u201d \u2013 it doesn\u2019t make you laugh or cry though. The big emotions: they happen at your real ceremony \u2013 your humanist ceremony. Your celebrant can advise you on details and timings, so always The fundamental thing in a humanist ceremony is that it stems from the couple and their story, so the length is dictated by what should be included. That said, it is unusual for a ceremony to go over say 45 minutes unless there is something like a walk or communal experience included: flow and peak of ceremony is an important consideration in ceremony writing, to keep your guests paying close attention and for you, the couple, to remember every moment.<\/p><p>I cannot possibly tell you what happens in the ceremony as every one is unique! \u2013 suffice to say there are always vows and promises from the couple to each other, and often there is a ring exchange. Everything else is up for grabs! And how exciting is reflect your personalities (not to mention full of love \u2026 and tears!), then I don\u2019t think you\u2019ll have one single regret in opting to have a humanist
